Funding, Scholarships, and Awards

There are a number of funding opportunities, scholarships, and awards available to students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. Current and prospective students who are interested in applying for one of these awards are welcomed to reach out to a member of the SEOE community (an advisor, class professor, or member of the SEOE Diversity Committee) for guidance on the application process.

Funding, Scholarships, and Awards within UofSC

For undergraduates, the TRIO program offers information, services, and support to help low-income and first-generation college students reach their academic goals. This includes the Opportunity Scholars Program for freshmen and the Ronald E. McNair Program for students interested in pursuing graduate studies. There are also opportunities for summer research through the South Carolina Alliance for Minority Participation Summer Research Program.

For graduate students, the Bridge to Doctorate program provides support and financial resources for underrepresented minority students obtaining a doctoral degree. The Grace Jordan McFadden Professors Program was created to address the underrepresentation of minorities in the professoriate. This program is open to prospective and current doctoral and MFA students. The Graduate Civics Scholars Program provides opportunities for interdisciplinary research, involvement in social justice initiatives, and an enhanced understanding of the role of scholarship in addressing societal needs.

The following scholarships are available within the SEOE:

  • The Dr Mack Gipson Scholarship is an annual award for students in Geological Sciences or Geophysics who are from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the geosciences. For application information, see Scholarships.
  • The June Trapp Swanson Scholarship is an annual award for students who graduated from a SC high school, have a demonstrated interest in botany, and financial need. For application information, see Scholarships.
  • The Richard C. Morris Marine Science Scholarship is an annual award that goes to a Marine Science student based on academic excellence and financial need. For application information, see Scholarships.
