School of Medicine Columbia

Year One

The University of South Carolina School of Medicine approved a comprehensive five-year strategic plan in 2017. The plan was crafted with input from our faculty, staff, students and various stakeholders with the aim of moving the school forward in our mission of “serving the people of South Carolina and beyond through exemplary medical and health education, transformative research and compassionate patient care.”

During Year One of the plan's implementation significant progress has been made toward achieving the five strategic goals identified in the plan. The Year One Strategic Plan Progress Report [pdf] outlines some of our achievements to date.

Create a collaborative culture of discovery, innovation, and improvement which will transform healthcare within our health system and community.

  • Launched Research Center for Transforming Health to move our efforts from the laboratory bench to the patient bedside. The center has already developed several new initiatives for faculty, staff and students.

  • Created the Emerging Physician Scientist Faculty Fellows program to mentor clinical faculty interested in research.

  • Developed plans for a Cardiovascular Translational Research Center with recruitment for a Center director underway

Strengthen and leverage relationships with key partners to enhance educational, research, clinical, and leadership programs.

  • Established the S.C. Center for Rural and Primary Healthcare in an effort to expand programs for training, recruiting and retaining primary care physicians in South Carolina’s rural and underserved areas as well as enhancing service to rural patients.

  • Partnered with the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center to create new joint Simulation and Interactive Learning Center (anticipated to open in early 2019).

  • Accepted first cohort of BARSC-MD students from the University of South Carolina Honors College into the School of Medicine.

Create an evolving, more clinically-integrated curriculum for SOM students, based upon the needs of students, patients, health systems and partners, and upon educational and clinical best practices.

  • Established a Curriculum Innovation Task Force to undertake comprehensive review of the medical education curriculum. A full framework for the 2020 curriculum has been approved and will be implemented over the next three years.

  • Opened the Student Success and Wellness Center with a newly hired director in place.

  • Expanded summer research opportunities for students.

Advance diversity and inclusion, to enhance effectiveness and to prepare a diverse workforce for the people we serve.

  • Launched a twice yearly diversity forum.

  • Increased development efforts to fund student scholarships. Everett L. Dargan Endowment was the featured fund for the university’s inaugural Give 4 Garnet day.

  • Working with partner organizations, we working to create new pipeline programs. A five-year Master of Biomedical Science pipeline program will be expanded in the fall of 2019.

Plan for new SOM facilities as part of a new USC Health Sciences Campus, positioned as part of a vibrant academic health center.

  • Developmental planning for the new health sciences campus on the “Bull Street” property continues. University leaders continue to advocate with the state legislature regarding the benefits of an academic health center campus to the entire state.
