Charge to the Assessment Advisory Committee
The committee is charged to develop a recommended policy and plan for
University-wide assessment of student learning in general education
and in the major. The assessment of general education should be expressed
in terms of abilities rather than in terms of courses, and the criteria
should be applicable to all USC students. The assessment plan should
include several methods, and assessment data should be useful to both
individual faculty and to the faculty as a whole as a basis for improving
undergraduate education.
A general plan and process for assessing student learning in the major should be
useable by any academic department and should involve faculty with
information to use in improving the education of students who gradaute from
their programs. It should also relate to the goals and objectives of the
departments' strategic plans as expressed in their reports to the Futures
Committee. Information resulting from assessment of student learning in the
majors might also be useful in periodic program review.
